A flatbed is a type of computer scanner that allows for scanning large and bulky objects, as it features a flat surface where the object is placed. The scanner moves beneath the object, capturing its image through sensors.

In the context of technology, ‘Flatbed’ refers to a Type of scanning device that captures images from a flat surface. It consists of a glass pane on which the document or object is placed, illuminated by a light source below, and scanned by a sensor that moves across the surface. Unlike traditional scanners that use a roller mechanism to feed the document through, flatbeds allow users to scan large, fragile, or bound items that cannot be folded or creased.
Flatbed scanners provide high-quality image capture due to their ability to maintain a consistent distance between the document and the sensor. This results in accurate color reproduction, sharp details, and reduced distortion in the scanned images. Additionally, flatbeds often incorporate features such as automatic document feeders (ADF) for batch scanning, transparency support for scanning slides and negatives, and optical character recognition (OCR) for converting scanned text into editable digital format.

History
The concept of flatbed scanning originated in the early 1970s with the development of photosensitive imaging devices called charge-coupled devices (CCDs). CCDs captured images by converting light into an electrical signal, enabling the creation of digital images. In 1984, Hewlett-Packard (HP) introduced the First commercially available flatbed scanner, the HP ScanJet, which revolutionized the way documents and images were digitized.
Over the years, flatbed scanners have undergone significant advancements. The introduction of faster sensors, higher resolution capabilities, and improved image processing algorithms enhanced the quality and efficiency of scanning.
