History
The concept of facsimile transmission originated in the 19th century with the invention of the telegraph. Alexander Bain invented an early facsimile system called the “Electrochemical Telegraph” in 1843, which used pendulums and electrochemical paper to transmit simple images.
In the 1850s, Italian physicist Giovanni Caselli developed the “pantelegraph,” which significantly improved the transmission quality of images. Caselli’s device used a rotating cylinder to Scan the original document and transmit the electrical impulses over telegraph wires.
By the early 20th century, the fax machine evolved into a practical and widely used technology. In 1924, American inventor Richard Ranger demonstrated the “Radiofax” system, which used radio signals to transmit fax images. In 1947, the First commercially viable fax machine, the “Telefax,” was manufactured by the Western Union Telegraph Company.
Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, fax machines became an integral part of business and personal communication. However, with the advent of high-speed internet and digital document sharing, the popularity of faxing gradually declined. Despite the decline, fax technology still holds its importance in specific applications where secure and reliable document transmission is paramount.
