BattleScribe Roster Editor File – file format by Jonathan Taylor

ROS is a file format used by BattleScribe, a roster editor for tabletop wargames. It is a compressed XML file that contains data about a roster of units, including the units’ names, stats, and equipment. ROS files can be shared with other players to allow them to view or edit the roster.

ROS File Structure

A ROS file (.ROS) is an XML-based file format that stores data for tabletop wargaming army lists created using BattleScribe, a free and open-source roster editor. It contains information such as unit names, points costs, special rules, and wargear options. Each ROS file represents a complete army list, allowing users to create, manage, and share their rosters.

Advantages of Using ROS Files

ROS files offer several advantages for tabletop wargamers. They provide a structured and standardized format for army list data, ensuring compatibility across different versions of BattleScribe. By storing army lists in a single file, ROS files make it easy to organize and track multiple rosters, preventing data loss or errors. Furthermore, ROS files can be shared with other players, allowing for easy exchange of army lists for tournaments or casual games. BattleScribe’s intuitive interface and extensive library of data for various wargames make ROS files accessible and valuable for both experienced and novice wargamers.

Opening ROS Files without ROS

If you do not have the BattleScribe Roster Editor installed, you can still open ROS files using a text editor. Text editors such as Notepad (Windows) or TextEdit (Mac) can open and display the contents of ROS files. However, you will not be able to edit the contents of the file using a text editor.

To open a ROS file using a text editor, follow these steps:

  1. Launch the text editor on your computer.
  2. Click the “File” menu.
  3. Select “Open” from the drop-down menu.
  4. In the “Open File” dialog box, navigate to the folder containing the ROS file you want to open.
  5. Select the ROS file and click the “Open” button.

The ROS file will open in the text editor. You can now view the contents of the file.

ROS File Format

The ROS file format is a proprietary file format used by BattleScribe, a popular roster management software for miniature wargames. ROS files store data related to army lists, including unit selections, equipment upgrades, and other game-specific information. These files are designed to be easily editable by users, allowing them to quickly and efficiently create and manage their army rosters.

ROS files are organized into a hierarchical structure, with each army list represented as a separate file. Within each file, units are grouped into detachments, and equipment upgrades are assigned to specific units. The format also supports the inclusion of custom rules and data, enabling users to tailor their army lists to specific game scenarios or preferences.
