MCWORLD Files: Minecraft World Backups

MCWORLD files are Minecraft world backup files that contain a copy of all the data in a Minecraft world. This includes the world’s terrain, structures, items, and entities. MCWORLD files can be used to create a backup of a world in case it is accidentally deleted or corrupted, or to transfer a world to another device.

MCWORLD files are created by the Minecraft game client when a player saves the world. The file is saved in the world’s directory, which is usually located in the following location:

%appdata%\.minecraft\saves\[world name]

On macOS, the world directory is located at:

~/Library/Application Support/minecraft/saves/[world name]

To create a MCWORLD file, simply save the world in the Minecraft game client. The file will be created automatically in the world’s directory.

Method 1: Using Minecraft

  1. Launch Minecraft and navigate to the “Play” tab.
  2. Click on the “Import World” option and select the .MCWORLD file.
  3. Enter a name for the world and click “Import.”
  4. Wait for the import process to complete. You can now access the world from the “Play” tab.

Method 2: Manually Extracting Files

  1. Right-click on the .MCWORLD file and select “Extract All…”
  2. Choose a destination folder for the extracted files.
  3. Locate the “world” folder within the extracted files.
  4. Copy the “world” folder to your Minecraft saves folder, typically located at “%appdata%.minecraft\saves” on Windows or “~/Library/Application Support/minecraft/saves” on Mac.
  5. Launch Minecraft and open the imported world from the “Play” tab.
