It is an Input Device that works by detecting the presence and location of a finger or stylus on its surface. Touch screens are composed of several layers. The topmost Layer is typically made of glass or plastic, which allows users to see the digital content. Beneath this layer is a transparent electrode layer that detects the presence of a finger or stylus. The bottommost layer is a reflective layer that bounces light back to the electrode layer, allowing it to determine the location of the touch.

Touch screens use several technologies to detect touch, including:

  • Capacitive touch: Detects the change in capacitance when a finger or stylus touches the surface.

History

The concept of touch screens has been around for decades, but the first practical touch screen device was developed in the early 1970s by Dr. Samuel Hurst. Hurst’s touch screen used a resistive technology and was used on the PLATO IV Computer System.
