History

The origins of ransomware can be traced back to the 1980s, when a Virus known as the “AIDS Trojan” infected floppy disks and demanded a ransom payment to unlock the infected files. However, it was not until the late 2000s that ransomware began to emerge as a major threat. In 2005, the “Gpcode” ransomware emerged, followed by the more sophisticated “CryptoLocker” ransomware in 2013. CryptoLocker targeted Windows-based computers, encrypting files and demanding a ransom payment in Bitcoin.

Since then, ransomware has evolved rapidly, with new variants emerging frequently. In 2017, the “WannaCry” ransomware attack infected hundreds of thousands of computers worldwide, demanding ransom payments in Bitcoin. This attack raised global awareness of the threat posed by ransomware and prompted organizations to prioritize cybersecurity measures. Today, ransomware remains a persistent and evolving threat, with cybercriminals continuously developing new techniques to bypass security controls.
