“Proto-Danksharding” refers to an experimental Ethereum network upgrade designed to enhance transaction processing speed and scalability by temporarily splitting the blockchain into multiple segments. This technique, intended as a precursor to full-fledged “Danksharding,” involves dividing the network into shards and assigning each shard to a specific group of validators to process transactions concurrently.

What does Proto-Danksharding mean?

Proto-Danksharding is a proposed Ethereum blockchain scalability solution that aims to increase transaction throughput and reduce gas fees. It is a precursor to the more advanced Danksharding proposal and involves splitting Ethereum’s data into smaller shards, or partitions. Each shard is processed by a separate validator, reducing the computational burden on individual nodes and allowing for faster transaction processing.

Proto-Danksharding introduces a mechanism called “data availability sampling,” where validators randomly sample a subset of data shards to verify their availability. This reduces the amount of data that needs to be downloaded and processed by each validator, further improving efficiency. It also incorporates “cross-shard communication,” where validators can securely communicate across shards to access data from other shards as needed.

This approach allows for parallel processing of transactions, enabling Ethereum to handle a significantly higher volume of transactions without compromising security or Decentralization. It addresses the scalability limitations of the current Ethereum network, which has struggled to keep up with increasing transaction demand.

Proto-Danksharding has several key applications in technology today:

History

The concept of Proto-Danksharding emerged in the Ethereum community in 2021 as a potential solution to the network’s scalability challenges. Researchers and developers at the Ethereum Foundation and various research labs began exploring its feasibility and technical implementation.

In 2022, the Ethereum Foundation published a research Paper outlining the technical details and design principles of Proto-Danksharding. The paper introduced the concept of data availability sampling and cross-shard communication as key components of the proposed solution.

Currently, Proto-Danksharding is under active development and testing on the Ethereum test network, Sepolia. The Ethereum community plans to deploy it on the main Ethereum network in multiple stages. The first stage, which involves implementing data availability sampling, is expected to be released in early 2023.
