Each Letter, number, and punctuation mark is represented by a unique pattern of short and long signals. The code is comprised of five BASIC elements: a dot (·), a dash (-), a word space ( / ), a letter space ( ), and a number space (here represented as ~~).

The dot is the shortest element in Morse Code and represents a single electrical or mechanical impulse. The dash is Three times the length of a dot and represents three impulses. The space between elements within a character is equal in length to one dot or unit. The space between characters is equal to three units. The space between words is equal to seven units.

In 1837, Alfred Vail, a collaborator of Morse, suggested the addition of dot-and-dash combinations to represent letters and punctuation marks. The revised code, known as the “Morse Code,” was adopted for use on the first commercially successful telegraph line between Washington, D.C. and Baltimore in 1844.
