In the early 2000s, a Group of visionary scientists recognized the immense potential of open data sharing to accelerate scientific progress. The initial development of MODIO was funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF) and the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation. The platform was officially launched in 2011 as a collaborative effort between the University of California, Berkeley, the California Institute of Technology, and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
