The first keypad was invented in 1890 by Almon Strowger. Strowger was a Kansas City undertaker who was frustrated with the local telephone Operator. He believed that she was deliberately misconnecting his calls to a rival funeral home. In response, Strowger invented an automatic telephone exchange that used a keypad to dial numbers.

Strowger’s keypad was a rotary dial, which was used to enter numbers one digit at a time. The dial was connected to a series of switches, which routed the call to the appropriate destination. Strowger’s invention was a major breakthrough in Telecommunications, and it laid the foundation for the modern telephone system.
