History

KaZaA was developed by Niklas Zennström and Janus Friis, the same duo who later founded Skype. The first version of KaZaA was Released in 2001, and it quickly became one of the most popular P2P file-sharing applications in the world.

However, KaZaA also attracted a lot of criticism. The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) sued KaZaA for copyright infringement, and the company was eventually forced to settle the lawsuit. In 2006, KaZaA was acquired by Sharman Networks.

Sharman Networks continued to develop KaZaA, and the application remained popular for several more years. However, the rise of other P2P file-sharing applications, such as BitTorrent, led to KaZaA’s decline. In 2012, Sharman Networks announced that it would be Shutting down KaZaA.
