History
The concept of ITAs emerged in the early days of telephony when different telephone companies needed to interconnect their networks to allow customers to make calls between different networks. The first known ITA was established in 1897 between The Bell Telephone Company and Western Union Telegraph Company.
As the telecommunications industry evolved, ITAs became more complex and standardized. In the 1980s, the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) developed international standards for ITAs, known as the Series D Recommendations. These recommendations provided a framework for interconnecting networks on a global scale.
With the advent of the internet, ITAs were adapted to accommodate the exchange of data traffic. The Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) developed the Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) as a Standard for routing data traffic between different networks.
