History

The concept of human-in-the-loop originated in the early days of Artificial Intelligence (AI) research. In the 1950s and 1960s, AI pioneers such as John McCarthy and Marvin Minsky envisioned a future where humans and machines would collaborate closely to solve problems and drive innovation.

The term “Human-in-the-Loop” was coined in the early 1980s by researchers at the University of California, Berkeley. The researchers were working on developing autonomous vehicles and realized that certain situations would require human intervention. They introduced the idea of a “human-in-the-loop” as a way for humans to oversee and intervene in the control of automated systems.
