Gumstix
Gumstix
Gumstix is a series of open-source, single-board computers designed for embedded systems, featuring compact size, low power consumption, and a variety of connectivity options, suitable for applications such as industrial automation, robotics, and wearable devices.
What does Gumstix mean?
Gumstix is a brand of small, low-power single-board computers (SBCs) designed for Embedded systems applications. Gumstix SBCs are characterized by their compact size, low power consumption, and high reliability, making them ideal for use in applications where space and power are constrained.
Gumstix SBCs are typically based on ARM processors and feature a variety of I/O interfaces, including GPIO, UART, I2C, and SPI. They also typically include on-board memory, storage, and networking capabilities. Gumstix SBCs are often used in applications such as industrial automation, robotics, and medical devices.
Applications
Gumstix SBCs are used in a wide range of applications where size, power, and reliability are critical. Some common applications include:
- Industrial automation: Gumstix SBCs are used in industrial automation applications such as programmable logic controllers (PLCs), distributed control systems (DCSs), and human-machine interfaces (HMIs).
- Robotics: Gumstix SBCs are used in robotics applications such as autonomous mobile robots (AMRs), unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), and collaborative robots (cobots).
- Medical devices: Gumstix SBCs are used in medical devices such as patient monitors, infusion pumps, and diagnostic equipment.
- Other applications: Gumstix SBCs are also used in a variety of other applications such as point-of-sale (POS) systems, digital signage, and home automation systems.
History
Gumstix was founded in 2003 by Ryan Seys and Adam Katz. The company’s first product was the Gumstix Overo, a small, low-power SBC based on the ARM9 processor. The Overo was followed by a series of other Gumstix SBCs, including the Verdex, the Geode, and the Cherry.
In 2013, Gumstix was acquired by Avnet, a global electronics distributor. Avnet has continued to invest in the Gumstix brand, and the company’s SBCs are now used in a wide range of applications around the world.
