History

In the 1980s, the concept of the byte was expanded to include two types: the ASCII byte and the EBCDIC byte. ASCII bytes are used to represent characters in the American Standard Code for Information Interchange, while EBCDIC bytes are used in systems based on the Extended Binary Coded Decimal Interchange Code.
