An access point name (APN) is a configuration setting used in cellular networks to specify the gateway between the device and the network’s core, allowing devices to establish data connections with the internet.

An access point name (APN) is a configuration setting used in cellular networks to establish a data connection. It acts as an identifier that tells the network operator which gateway to use for internet access and which IP address to assign to the device. APNs are typically provided by the network operator and are unique to each Carrier.
The APN comprises three key components:
- Network Identifier: Specifies the network operator and type of network being accessed (e.g., GSM, 3G, 4G, 5G).
- Operator Identifier: Identifies the specific mobile network operator providing the data service.
- Protocol Identifier: Indicates the type of network protocol being used for data transmission (e.g., IP, IPv6).
When a device connects to a cellular network, it sends a request to the network operator with its APN configuration. The network operator then uses the APN to identify the appropriate gateway and allocate an IP address for the device.
