IEEE 802.3z, also known as Gigabit Ethernet, is a networking standard that defines the specifications for gigabit-per-second data transmission over copper twisted pair cabling. It was developed as an extension to the earlier 100Base-TX standard, providing significantly faster data transfer rates.

What does 802.3z mean?

802.3z is a standard established by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) for Fast Ethernet. Implemented in 1998, 802.3z is a widely adopted standard that allows for Data transmission at speeds of 100 megabits per second (Mbps) over twisted-pair copper cabling. This standard was developed to meet the growing demand for faster data transfer rates in local area networks (LANs).

802.3z utilizes a technology called full-duplex, which allows data to be transmitted and received simultaneously on the same channel, eliminating the risk of collisions that can occur in half-duplex systems.
